Did you know that Rosé wine’s modern origins traces back to 6th century BC when the Greek settlers from the region of Phocaea brought grapevines to modern-day Marseille, France? At the time, they used a combination of techniques, blending knowledge from ancient Greek winemakers, as well as new innovations to create bright, fresh rosé wines that became popular across the Mediterranean. This makes Rosé one of the oldest known wine styles, with a history stretching over 2,500 years!
Rosé is made exclusively from red grapes. The characteristic pink color comes from the brief contact of grape skins with the juice—usually only a few hours during fermentation. Blending red and white wines is reserved for sparkling rosé and Champagne only.
Many different production methods are used to make Rosé - maceration, direct pressing, and the saignée (“bleeding”) method. They all influence the wine’s color, flavor, and style. Of the many styles of Rosé, our favorite is Provençal - fruity, fresh, crisp, and on the dry side, making this pale pink wine suitable for any occasion. Picayune's Hay Penny Rosé is a delightful expression of this style, a bright and joyous organic wine!
