The story behind
Invented in Italy at the end of the 16th century, the Game of Goose (whose French name is jeu de l’oie) became a favourite amusement in all the European courts. The imagery of this board game, in which the players take turns to throw the dice and move their counters along a spiral, evolved over time, lending itself to numerous different themes and interpretations. In this scarf, Gianpaolo Pagni imagines a new circuit inspired by a 19th-century variant of the game preserved in the Émile Hermès collection. Each square, arranged in symmetrical, elliptic composition, contains a motif formed using stamps created by the artist. And this is how the Jeu de l’oie became a Jeu de soie – from a game of goose to a game of silk.
