The story behind
The illustrator Alice Shirley was inspired by William Blake’s famous 1794 poem, The Tyger. Shirley, who learned the poem as a schoolgirl, sought to answer the poem’s exploration of ferocity by showing the tiger at home in its natural, beautiful, and healing environment. She collaborated with London's Natural History Museum, where she discovered an East India Company collection of botanical illustrations which she used to depict the tiger resting in the Periyar reserve in Kerala, India, surrounded by flowering plants used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.
