Spider Woman’s Children, 2024.
Wool warp, wool/mohair weftThe Spider Woman’s Cross symbol has been part of Diné weaving for centuries. The symbol appears in the American Southwest on basketry as well as ceramics. The Diné believe we were gifted our textile arts traditions from Spider Woman and Spider Man in the ancient past. The unique cross shape of the textile represents Spider Woman and the crosses woven for the design represent her children, the Diné weavers of the past, present, and future. Dyes used include both natural and synthetic compounds. The Expanded Rainbow in this textile is made by more than 270 colors of weft. Venancio Aragón is a Diné textile artist. He holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees: one in Cultural Anthropology from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and the other in Native American Studies from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.
