A few years ago, my family and I visited a beautiful vineyard in the Red Hills. After spending a few hours walking the land, I felt that the place was sacred. I am not sure what it was; perhaps it was the majestic oak tree (supposedly the oldest in California) that could have inspired the Avatar movie producers or the earth covered with obsidian stones also known as Apache tears. In the end, the energy from the place was inspiring. I am excited to introduce Obsidian.

The label is quite personal, it is a collaboration between Terrance Guardipee, a Ledger artist from the Blackfeet nation and myself. Terrance built a collage between a French antique cheese and wine map that I found in France and an old ledger from Montana dated 1894. A lot of the symbols on the drawing evoke part of my story and adventures in the wine world.

Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Red Hills AVA, 2,950 ft elevation vineyard

 Alcohol:           14.2%

Tasting Note:    Deep inky color with purple hues. The nose is packed with generous blueberries and bergamot tea aromas. The palate reveals layers of blackberries, ripe cherries, roasted coffee grain, dark chocolate with hints of mineral. Obsidian has a powerful tannic structure yet the tannins are refined and elegant. The wine ends with a lengthy, elegant blueberries note finish.

Production:      250 cases

  • Alcohol 14.2%
  • Appellation Red Hills AVA
  • Bottling Date November 2019
  • Varietal 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Vintage 2016

Food Pairing

This is a big Cabernet Sauvignon that demands a big entree. Grilled steak and all the fixings is the perfect pairing to our Obsidian Cabernet Sauvignon. When pairing with cheese, choose a salty hard cheese such as Ossau Iraty to soften the tannins and bring out the earthiness of this intensely structured wine.
