Philander Begay is a Diné (Navajo) artist who has significantly contributed to the world of Native American jewelry. With 20 years of silversmithing experience, Philander's work draws significant inspiration from iconic Navajo symbols, including Spider Woman, dragonflies, waterbirds and horned toads. His tufa-cast jewelry has earned him international recognition and numerous awards. His unique designs combine the ancient, traditional tufa sand-casting techniques with his artistic vision and skill. Philander is the brother of noted jeweler Darryl Dean, who was his mentor and teacher.
Tufa casting is a labor-intensive process honed by the Diné (Navajo), Zuni, and Hopi tribes. Tufa stone is made of compressed volcanic ash, hand-carved into delicate designs. The porous stone imparts a distinctive finish to the pieces, though the brittle tufa stone generally breaks after a single use, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece.
