Buffalo Dancer, a Taos based silversmith guild of artisans crafts custom hat bands using their collection of vintage coins. Modernizing the 'coin silver' tradition started among Native tribes in the late 19th century. As the value of the silver used to mint coins in the US exceeded the value of the coin itself, artists would melt the coins and repurpose for jewelry making. The Buffalo Dancer group has designed both traditional and modern pieces, both melting down and hand stamping, and using the coin in their original form.
