An owl, the messenger that travels between the material and spiritual worlds, rises above four walls that mark out a house, the tribe's meeting place. To the north are svmbols of knowledge and connection to the sky, to the south creation and water, to the east light and the giant eagle on which the Maoris travelled. To the west, the tears of the albatross express the sufferings of this people.
